Approved NZTA Accelerated courses for Class 2&4 - 3&5 heavy vehicle licence

If you want to drive heavy vehicles, you have to obtain the appropriate learner license (class 2, 3, 4 or 5) before driving. The license class you need to obtain depends on the weight of the vehicle you want to drive.

Driver Licensing Courses

Heavy vehicle driver licences are needed to drive a wide range of vehicles including trucks and trailers, buses, large mobile homes, mobile cranes, fire engines, forklifts, heavy tractors, self-powered agricultural and construction machines and vehicles with pivot steering.

There are four different heavy vehicle driver licences (Classes 2-5), each based on the type of vehicle (rigid or combination) and the weight of the vehicle:

NZTA Approved Passenger Endorsement courses

Licence Endorsement courses

From October 1, 2017, passing a P endorsement course is no longer required to drive a passenger service vehicle (i.e. a vehicle that takes paying passengers e.g. taxi, bus, coach, etc). Course providers must not issue any P endorsement certificates after October 1.

You are still required to hold a P endorsement, though. Drivers must have held a full New Zealand driver’s licence for at least two years before they can be granted a P endorsement.

No further driving test is required to get the P endorsement (previously a driver was required to re-sit a full licence test if it was more than 5 years after they had passed their last licence test).
